Clear or Black Card Guard? How to Choose the Right Finish

Black Card Guard holding a BGS graded Pikachu slab

Quick answer: choose Clear if you want the slab to look exactly as it came back from the grader, with nothing between you and the card but crystal-clear acrylic. Choose Black if you want the case to frame the card, so the slab stands out against the shelf. Both finishes protect the same way: a precision-cut acrylic case with 99.95% UV protection, a magnetic lid, and the label and cert number on full view.

The four OG Series guards

Guard Finish Inside depth Price
Clear Guard — PSA Clear acrylic 8 mm $29.95
Clear Guard — BGS Clear acrylic 10 mm $29.95
Black Guard — PSA Tinted black acrylic 8 mm $29.95
Black Guard — BGS Solid black acrylic 10 mm $29.95

Every guard is a precision fit for the bare slab, so take any rubber bumper off first. Not sure which slab you have? See our slab fit guide and the PSA and BGS slab size guide.

Choose Clear if…

  • You want the slab to look untouched. Clear acrylic all but disappears, so you see the slab, the label and the card exactly as the grader sealed them.
  • The card is busy or colourful. Full-art and alternate-art cards already have plenty going on; clear lets the artwork carry the display.
  • You collect both PSA and BGS. Clear looks the same in both fits, so a mixed shelf stays uniform (the black finishes differ between fits; see below).
  • You want the best seller. Clear PSA is our most popular guard by a distance.

Choose Black if…

  • You want the card to pop. A black frame cuts out the shelf behind it, so the card reads as the only thing on display.
  • Your shelf is light or cluttered. Black gives each slab a clean edge against white walls, wood or busy backgrounds.
  • It’s a grail. A single black-framed slab on a desk or shelf looks deliberate, like a framed piece rather than a stored card.

Black PSA and Black BGS aren’t identical

The two black guards use different acrylic. Black PSA is tinted black acrylic, which gives a dark, smoky frame. Black BGS is solid black acrylic, a deeper, fully black frame. Both keep the card, label and cert number on view. If you want every slab on a shelf to match exactly, keep each shelf to one fit, or go Clear across the board.

Mixing Clear and Black on one shelf

Mixing works best when it’s on purpose. Three layouts that look good:

  • Black for the centrepiece, Clear around it. Put your best slab in Black in the middle and line the rest up in Clear either side.
  • One finish per row. A row of Black above a row of Clear reads tidier than an alternating mix.
  • Finish by grade. Keep Black for your 10s and Clear for everything else, so the gems stand out at a glance.

What both finishes give you

  • Precision-cut acrylic: 8 mm deep inside for PSA, 10 mm for BGS.
  • 99.95% UV protection to help slow fading on display.
  • Scuff protection for the slab face and cover for the edges and corners.
  • A magnetic lid, and the label and cert number on full view.
  • Packed by hand in Australia.

Frequently asked questions

Can you still see the label in a Black Card Guard?

Yes. Both black guards frame the slab and keep the card, label and cert number on view.

Is Clear or Black better for protection?

Neither: they’re the same precision-cut acrylic case with the same 99.95% UV protection. The choice is how you want the slab to look.

Why does Black PSA look different from Black BGS?

Black PSA is tinted black acrylic and Black BGS is solid black acrylic, so the PSA frame is slightly smokier.

Is Black PSA back in stock?

Yes, Black PSA is back. The last run sold out, so stock is limited: get yours on the Black Guard — PSA page.
